| We get to do some interesting glass jobs and laminating here at Ocean Magic. The other week we had a tapered rail blood red and black resin tint… resin tints are always interesting as the variable you can control accurately are really limited, the results are normally outstanding though. Our “master-glasser” is Jason Gray. Glassing a board is a real art, the challenge being to create strength whilst keeping the surfboard light as possible. Using traditional resins this balance requires the glasser to work with great speed and dexterity as the resin needs to have a fairly quick gel time in order to stop too much absorption into the blank (which therefore keeps the finished board light). At the same time the free laps and swallow tails all have to be finished properly to ensure that the glass sits as flat as possible on the rails and tails; any lumps and bumps in this area result in the sander having to sand through the weave and this creates a weak spot in the board. We use some special techniques developed over 30 years working with PU resins to ensure your board is as strong and light as it can possibly be. On top of that we love doing the odd resin tint with cut and trimmed rail lines, or adding a tail patch for those with a heavy back foot. We also do Volan glass jobs on some of the traditional mals. At Ocean Magic we are focussed on providing the ultimate high performance surfboard, whatever the niche or style, and we are always looking for new and more environmentally responsible glassing systems. Most recently we have been experimenting with The Keahana EPS Triaxial Epoxy system – watch our blog to see how this technology performs. |
